Meet The Team: Rohrich Mazda’s Jay Obertance

If you see Jay Obertance in the showroom at Rohrich Mazda during August, give him a big hello and shout out that you saw his employee profile online. He’ll be more than happy to talk more about his favorite things—ask him for a restaurant recommendation or about bowties!

You might know Jay because of his “customer first” attitude. He’s not just the funny guy you see on social media, but someone who cares enough to greet his clients with their favorite Starbucks drink. That attitude is why Jay is the top salesperson at Rohrich Mazda. Actually, he’s one of the top salespeople in the entire region when it comes to Mazda’s. Selling 50+ cars a month is common for Jay.

But while Jay loves coming to the dealership, some of you may wonder what else he enjoys doing. Here’s what Jay gets into outside of work:

What kind of hobbies does Jay have?

  • Cooking: “I’ve been trained in the kitchen in my spare time over the years.”
*Fun fact: Jay is a two-time champion (2023 and 2024) of the Strawberry Jell-O Pretzel Salad Standoff competition at the Block at Northway for his amazing baking and dessert crafting skills!
  • Gardening: “I grow a lot of the things I eat.”
  • Car detailing (to the point of obsession!): “I used to own detailing shops so I’m always making sure anything I’m driving is gleaming inside and out.”
  • Cyclebar: “I love indoor cycling!”

What is Jay’s favorite thing about Pittsburgh?

  • “I love that Pittsburgh gives you a big feel without being huge, yet it’s becoming very diverse. New businesses are coming in, and as a result, new people get to experience the city. We’ve grown quite a bit, and our food scene is rapidly expanding, which is my favorite as I love to try new concepts, new pop-ups, new restaurant ideas, anything!”

What are you listening to?

  • “I listen to house music during any of my commutes. I like that the techno beat gets my head and body shaking.”

What’s Jay’s favorite holiday?

  • “No surprise that the man with a million bowties’ favorite holiday is August 28—National Bowtie Day! I’m always wearing a new bowtie.”

  1. Jay,
Looking to purchase a 2025 cx-5 for my daughter. She doesnt turn 16 until July, but expecting tariffs to increase cost, hence actively looing to purchase ASAP. She desires color black with a moon roof. Figure I would reach out and give you the sale if your are still in Sales. If not, steer me to someone that you would like to get the sale. Also, my middle son, Aidan, purchased a Mazda 3 from that lot in Dec 2023. Didn’t know u worked there until running into a colleague of urs at the Vintage Grand Prix in July 2024.

Hope to hear from you soon,
    John Brem
